A History of Cardboard Boxes

England has the proud claim of being the country to first produce the cardboard box - way back in 1817. It is difficult to imagine a time when we didn’t have cardboard boxes, with them being such a common and everyday way of storing and transporting goods.

However, it wasn’t until later in 1890 that the first pre-cut cardboard box (one that is produced flat to be folded up into a box later) was invented - and it was totally by accident by the Scottish-born Robert Gair. It was none other than Kellogg’s that popularised the use of cardboard boxes for packaging - their cereal was the first to ever use cardboard for cereal boxes.

Cardboard Box Recycling

It is fortunate that while almost 85% of the products we buy are packaged in cardboard, cardboard is one of the most recyclable materials and is already widely recycled. The cardboard is turned into a pulp by mixing it with water, softening the material. This pulp is then combined with wood shavings, dried out, and re-processed into cardboard that can be used again. Although, not all recycled cardboard is turned back into cardboard - some is turned into other products such as cat litter or toilet roll.

Flexothene offer a recycling service for your waste polythene - please visit our recycling page to learn more or get in touch with us.
